PepsiCo Custom Globies Awards

PepsiCo is a worldwide brand with many different products under its belt, of coarse including Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Smith’s, Dorito’s and many more. As of 2012 PepsiCo was the second largest food and beverage business in the world, and continues to climb as it continues to acquire more and more products in the food and beverage industry.

As part of their upcoming ‘Globies Awards’, PepsiCo contacted us to create some custom trophies for them using our signature layered style using acrylic and timber. Custom Award for Gold Coast Turf Club

An impressive events centre capable of hosting more than 2,500 guests, the Aquis Park Gold Coast Turf Club is primarily known as one of Australia’s busiest racecourses while also being host to a large number of public and private events, from conferences and expos to gala dinners, exhibitions, holiday parties and more.

With gorgeous panoramic views of the Gold Coast skyline and all the most popular modern amenities, the Gold Coast Turf Club is home to an annual sprint race for the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival – called the Bat Out Of Hell – and has been since 1996. A 900 metre feature sprint race with participants traveling from far and wide from across Australia, the annual Bat Out Of Hell winner receives a $90,000 prize and a Harley Davidson as a trainer’s bonus, not to mention a custom award to showcase for themselves.

This year we were tasked with creating a a custom award for this unique honour, and faced the challenge head on with our team of dedicated and creative professionals. Designed to incorporate elements of the Gold Coast and broader Australian lifestyle, we chose native Australian timber from southeast Queensland to encapsulate the award, adding a mixture of printed acrylic to bring depth to the design.

Custom designed to include the iconic skyline seen from the Gold Coast Turf Club, as well as waves and sand elements that speak to the Goldie way of life, the award is a testament to the level of precision and thoughtfulness we aim to incorporate into all of our custom award designs.

We thoroughly enjoyed making this one-of-a-kind award, and look forward to assisting you with your next custom award need on the Gold Coast or beyond. Contact us directly at [email protected] to speak with us about your ideas.

2018 Commonwealth Games Medal Boxes

Potato Press is a Gold Coast based design company that specialises in creating unique and memorable products across a wide range of industries. So, when the Commonwealth Games Committee approached us to discuss designing the medal boxes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, our team unsurprisingly jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this historic event.

Taking place every four years, the Commonwealth Games took place on the Gold Coast shores from the 4th to the 15th of April 2018. The multi-sport event invited members of the Commonwealth to compete, with more than 4,400 athletes, including 300 para-athletes, from 71 Commonwealth Games Associations, taking part. Potato Press were honoured to be able to contribute to this piece of Gold Coast history.

The design and construction

The design and construction of the medal boxes was no easy feat. 1,600 individual pieces were required, and it took a great deal of work and coordination to ensure they were all uniform and finished to the highest standard. At Potato Press we pride ourselves on thinking outside the box and wanted to create something nostalgic that could be treasured for many years to come. We wanted athletes to take something home that paid testament to all the hard work they had put into winning the medals contained within.

The finished products were made from Australian Blackbutt timber, with every piece hand finished, taking up to 2-3 days to complete. The laser cut boxes resembled a stylised version of the sand and waves that line the iconic Gold Coast shore. Looking down through the cut outs to the medal within, invoked the feeling of looking through the water to the seabed. With the ocean forming such an important part of the Gold Coast experience, it made perfect sense to incorporate these features into the design.

An exciting project for our entire team!

“To know that the fastest man or woman at the Commonwealth Games, or some of the 4,400 athletes competing are going to be taking these pieces all across the world is phenomenal.”

The internal timber facia was inscribed with the three driving words behind the 2018 Commonwealth Games: Humanity. Equality. Destiny. Our team were enamoured by the embodiment of this message across the event, and the hardworking crew who worked on the medal boxes look forward to contributing to the rich and thriving culture of the Gold Coast through more innovative and exciting projects.

Neville Bonner Memorial Artwork

One of our favourite local corporate artwork projects to date, we were recently contacted to design a custom art piece in honour of the late Australian politician, Neville Bonner. The first Aboriginal person to become a member of the Federal Parliament, Bonner was a Senator in Queensland from 1971 to 1983 before passing away at the age of 77 in 1999.

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, a custom Kwila frame was used for the three separate artistic pieces. In addition, A grade marine plywood was used for the interior, where our team members utilised custom laser etching artwork elements to complete the Neville Bonner portrait, as well as corresponding quote, boomerangs, and city landscape.

We are thrilled to participate in a project that pays tribute to our local Queensland legends, and are proud of the stunning design work completed by our Australia-based team members. We hope our fellow Aussies will admire this piece for years to come!

Baharian Wealth Management - Office Artwork

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Baharian Wealth Management is a boutique wealth management firm for individuals and families looking to properly manage their assets. With a focus on being “bigger than small, but smaller than big,” Baharian has acquired a widely respected and trusted reputation for clients both locally and afar.

Seeking a one-of-a-kind art piece for their office reception area in the Melbourne CBD, Baharian contacted us for a custom corporate artwork project.

Using their intricate logo design as inspiration, we created a 1200 x 1200 artistic piece to be mounted on the reception room wall, all hand assembled by our team of skilled designers. Beginning with a slab of quality blackbutt timber, we used our laser cutting technology to recreate the Baharian Wealth Management face logo with splashes of the custom PMS matching red colour for emphasis.

With the unique laser cut facial elements and underlying logo design, Baharian was truly impressed with the quality and proud to display the piece in their local Victoria office.

All Saints Pegasus Awards

Located on a 40 hectare campus in the lush Gold Coast hinterland, the All Saints Anglican School celebrates ‘Growing through Grace, Learning through Love.’

Recently enlisted to design a series of custom awards for the recipients of the All Saints Pegasus Awards, a creative writing competition for students, we pulled out all the stops to design a long-lasting piece that would act as a source of pride for both the students and their families for years to come.

Taking inspiration from the pegasus, we utilised laser cut acrylic practices along with UV printed elements to design the multi-coloured pegasus, competition name and All Saints School logo. The 2 pack bases added a sturdy and modern design to the awards, and we were more than pleased with the outcome of the project.

It was excellent to participate in the recognition of our local student population by designing these awards, and we hope to partner with many more schools in the future for all of their custom design award needs.

Emmanuel College - India Project

We are so proud to showcase one of our most recent and important jobs, the Emmanuel India Project, a partnership project between Queensland’s own Emmanuel College and The Institute for Indian Mother & Child (IIMC).

With a goal of raising $50,000 to fund, build and run a brand new, monsoon-proof concrete school in West Bengal, India, by November 2017, the Emmanuel India Project realises the importance of providing education to children who may not otherwise be able to attend school, be it due to overcrowded schools, a lack of teachers, or no access to transportation. With a current illiteracy rate of 56%, West Bengal’s children deserve a better, happier future through education.

Emmanuel College, with two locations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, is one of the leading schools in Australia. With 1,500 students and some of the best academic results in Queensland, its alumni includes prestigious accolades such as olympic athletes, international CEOs, national performers and social justice advocates.

The funds raised through this partnership, in addition to building costs for the school itself, will also cover students’ fees through the IIMC global sponsorship program, provide teacher mentorship through Emmanuel College’s ongoing PLAID program, and facilitate alumni volunteering both in and out of the school.

For our contribution, we utilised our team’s wealth of experience and creativity with custom timber joinery, laser etching and engraved details, and a laser cut custom timber veneer. Using both Queensland blackbut and a solid Red Cedar frame, our project was designed and built entirely in-house.

We are thankful to be a part of this heartwarming project, and look forward to leaving a lasting impression for such an important cause. Do you have a custom project you’ve been dreaming up? Feel free to get in touch for more information.

Here are some great shots from photographer Alister Randal documenting the day of the reveal.

We even created custom branded packaging for the big reveal!

Bodhi - Samples Drawers

A boutique apartment development located in Upper Mount Gravatt, a suburb of Brisbane, Australia, the Bodhi Apartments are a new project from successful Gold Coast developer, Adam Lacey. Featuring an assortment of one, two and three bedroom apartments in a bustling area, the Bodhi Apartments will also include a landscaped, ground floor barbecue area and recreation space, as well as secure parking and an open-plan living design.

As a part of the design stage, we were contacted to create custom designed, portable display suite sample boards for the Bodhi development, made to showcase the various materials used in the design of the apartments – from the wall tiles to laminates, timber flooring finishes, wall paint and carpet.

Typically designed to be fairly large and heavy, we decided to utilise a sleek, double drawer box design for ease of use. With trays that can be pulled out completely, we also included captions printed below each sample so everything was clearly identifiable. Custom hand bound with black leather and laser cut UV printed acrylic internal elements, we also love the subtle black-on-black design, which was made to include a direct image on the top for an added branding element.

Thinking of enlisting us to assist with your next custom project? Excellent! Please get in touch via email or phone, and we look forward to working with you on your next custom design need.

2017 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Champion Trophies

Kicking off both the men’s and women’s WSL World Championship Tours, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast was held at the renowned local surf spot, Snapper Rocks, in mid March 2017. Featuring some of the world’s best surfers, including Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore, among others, the event brought spectators by the thousands to the warm white sands of Coolangatta.

Tasked with the honourable duty of creating customised competition trophies for the contest winners, we went all out to create a product that reflected both our love for the ocean and Australia’s natural beauty.

With a desire to utilise quality local materials, we chose locally sourced, native Australian timber to pay homage to the origins and location of the competition, using the timber as both the backdrop and frame for the trophies. For the central focal point and inner portion, we created a unique and stylised birds eye view of Snapper Rocks, accomplished by overlaying laser cut coloured acrylics in order to portray the point break  waves that Snapper Rocks is so known for. Lastly, we layered laser cut timbers to represent the surrounding sand and rocks, creating a final cohesive look that speaks to both the location and overall surfer lifestyle.

After a fierce and exciting competition, surfer Owen Wright powered through the finals to become the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Champion alongside runner up and fellow Aussie surfer, Matt Wilkinson. In the women’s competition, Aussie surfer Stephanie Gilmore took home the top trophy, while American Lakey Peterson snagged runner up.

Our trophies glimmered in the well-deserved winners’ arms at the end of their fierce display of skill, and we continue to show our support for the sport of surfing, both locally and beyond.
